Teaching


Teachers want to make a difference in the lives of their students. Yet given the structure of the contemporary educational establishement the liklihood making such a diference is small.

The contemporary structure of education is based on a model established before the advent of moveable type: Asking students to sit before a teacher, listening carefully, writing a personal account to create a book, and memorizing teacher-defined passages portraying knowledge.

Moveable type revolutionized some elements of educational practice. Regretably it did to change enough.


Textbooks


Books are written not for pupils but for profits. Publishers, editors and authors comprise a system that is only marginally competitive and laden with a tradition that devalues change. A typical textbook is outdated before it is printed, loaded with errors of commission and omission, and, then incredibly, is maintained in service for four to ten years.

 

Testing

 

Whether standardized on a national scale or developed by a teacher to stimulate overnight work by students, tests
